When purchasing a new carpet we are of the opinion you should always replace the carpet underlay with new.

All underlay is prone to collapsing and crumbling especially in high traffic areas where there is a lot of foot traffic. If you fit new carpet on old underlay after a short period of time your new carpet can give the appearance of being uneven. This is known in the carpet trade as ridging.

Central heating can also dry an old underlay out after a period of years. This would cause crumbling.

Old underlay also collects dust and dirt which can seep through to the surface. This is known as draught marks and can ruin the appearance of your new carpet. The main benefits of installing a new carpet underlay is the increased wear ability of your new carpet. New underlay prolongs the life and durability of your newly installed carpet. Other benefits to take into consideration when deciding to have new underlay are sound proofing and superior comforts underfoot.
